How everyday people use essential oils

use essential oils

You may have heard your friends talking about essential oils and you have become curious to whether this is something you could use in your home.

Because everyone wants natural solutions these days right?

The good news is, that everyone can so easily start using essential oils daily to improve their health, their mood and in so many different ways in their home.

When I started using essential oils, I knew nothing about them except that they could be used as a fragrance. What I have learned since then, that high quality essential oils have massive therapeutic value to our life and it has given me an alternative to use whenever we need some support for our bodies and the best bonus every is that they smell so incredible!

Here are the best tips to start using essential oils in your home:

Pick a brand that is pure

The key to using oils therapeutically is to pick a brand that has no fillers or synthetics. Unfortunately, the industry is unregulated so it’s easy for companies to include the word “Pure” on their label and yet their oil to be anything but pure and includes synthetics and fillers. You might like to do some research on this, and in my experience, the best oils always cost more – because we all know you get what you pay for. If you find something that is only $5 – I can tell you now that it is not therapeutic grade.

I chose doTERRA for my family as I have a young son that I also like to use my oils on. It’s the only brand that I know of that publicly releases it’s quality reports from the battery of testing they go through before they go to market. You can read more about this on their quality sourcing and quality website Source to You.

Buy a starter collection and then open them!

Essential oils are amazing, but they can’t work if you don’t open the box! Get a starter kit and then open those bottles and have a good smell. You will find that some will make you feel really relaxed and others will feel energising and invigorated. You have just experienced your oils aromatically! This is the fastest way for oils to hit our brain and affect our emotions.

Turn on that diffuser

Most starter kits include a diffuser, so pick some of the oils you liked best and put them in your diffuser. I’ll often choose 2 or 3 oils and depending on the space use between 4-10 drops in total. This is the fun part as you get to experiment with different blends that appeal to you. Here are some of my favourite blends using doTERRA’s top 10 oils which are available in several of their most popular starter kits.

Funky Car?

Add a couple of drops of essential oil to the car mats in your car after you clean it. It will leave your car smelling divine!

Household carpet refresher

Add a couple of drops of essential oil to a tissue and vacuum it up. As you vacuum the rooms in your house it will spread that beautiful smell throughout.

Alternatively, if you want to give your carpets a deeper deodoriser try this recipe :

1 cup bicarb soda
10 drops doTERRA Essential Oil of your choice (I like a combination of Lemon and On Guard as this leaves it smelling lovely but has the added benefit of getting rid of any germs)
Add your oils to the bicarb and put in a container with a lid with holes. I have repurposed my old bicarb container from the supermarket for this.
Sprinkle on carpet 20 minutes before vacuuming

Add some oils to the bath

You can add some essential oils to your bath water to make it even more relaxing. A good mixture from the starter oils is Lavender and Frankincense. A good tip is to mix them some carrier oil such as Fractionated Coconut Oil before adding to the water as this helps them disperse.

Or make up some bath salts with this recipe.

1 cup Epsom Salts

1/4 cup bicarb soda

20-30 drops of essential oil. I like Lavender and Balance.

Mix ingredients together and store in an airtight glass jar. Add 2-3 teaspoons to your bath water.

Make up a personal blend

Making a blend so you can pop in your bag is not only fun but it’s a great way to create a blend to suit either your health right now or a smell you really like. The great way about making these up is it is a really economical way to use your oils.

Here are some of my favourite blend ideas that you can put in a roller bottles for winter wellness for kids. Roller-bottles can be found in my online shop or you can buy off amazon or eBay.

Use your oils in the laundry

Do you ever leave your washing in the machine for longer than it should be? That musty smell is hard to shift. I rewash my clothes and add in a couple of drops of Lavender and Purify.

Or you can also just add some drops of oils to dryer sheets or balls and your clothes will lose that icky smell and just be left smelling lovely.

You can also ditch the fabric softener and make your own. It’s far cheaper and all natural without the chemicals.

DIY Fabric Softener
1/4 cup of baking soda (optional)
4 cups of white vinegar
1 cup of hot water
lavender or lemon essential oil (or your favourite scent)
storage container with seal-able lid

Place your baking soda in a mixing bowl.
Add the vinegar to the baking soda slowly, it will bubble if you add it too fast
Add your hot water and be sure to mix well until all the baking soda dissolves.
Add 15-20 drops of your favourite essential oil (the more you add the stronger the scent will be).
Store your homemade fabric softener in a container with an air tight seal.
Shake well before each use.

Add your homemade laundry liquid fabric softener to the ‘fabric softener’ compartment of your washing machine for each load.

Add some essential oils to your shampoo

A drop of Tea Tree and Lavender in your shampoo does wonders for a dry scalp or dandruff. 1 drop of Rosemary will help to strengthen the hair and promote growth. So easy right?

Add some oils to your cooking

There is nothing worse than to start cooking and realise your missing a key ingredient. doTERRA’s oils are food grade and you can use quite a lot of them in your cooking for flavour. Always read the side of the bottle to check if that oil is suitable to be used for flavouring first.

Oils I use regularly

  • Lemon
  • Lime
  • Ginger
  • Rosemary
  • Thyme
  • Oregano
  • Wold Orange
  • Peppermint
  • Spearmint
  • Cardamom
  • Tangerine
  • Green Mandarin

And this is just a few of the huge range available.

Please note – when it comes to using oils internally I only recommend doTERRA. This is due to the high level of testing that they do on every single batch that you can view at the Source to You website. If you choose to use a different brand, I urge you to do your research as most brands available contain fillers or synthetics and are only designed to be used as a fragrance. doTERRA oils have FDA approval and are included on the GRAS list (Generally regarded as safe). This is what makes me choose doTERRA every day.

Create your own scented moisturiser

Get an unscented lotion and add a drop or 2 of your favourite scent. This will nourish your skin and leave you smelling lovely. doTERRA have a really lovely unscented body lotion that is silky on the skin.

Alternatively you can use a fractionated coconut oil and add a few drops of oil and then rub all over your body. You can use up to 5 drops per 10ml of coconut oil for an adult.

Make over your first aid kit

Ditch the store bought stuff, and make up everything you need so it is on hand when you need it. Some of the most popular first aid box essential oil blends are:

In a 10ml roller ball
10 drops Peppermint
10 drops Lavender
10 drops Frankincence
Top with Fractionated Coconut Oil

Apply to temples, back of neck, forehead. Use as required
Belly Blend

15  drops Digestzen
15  drops Wild Orange
Mix with small amount of Fractionated Coconut Oil and rub in a clockwise motion around belly button

Ouchie Spray

In a 30ml spray bottle
10 drops Lavender
10 drops Frankincense
10 drops Tea Tree
Top up with Fractionated Coconut Oil

So as you can see there is a never ending list of ways that you can use essential oils in your every day life. This is just some of the ways I see people using them when they get started and they take it to bigger and better levels. I have not even got into the massive ways people use their oils for immune support, body aches and pains, energy and concentration but let me just tell you – you can use them for all of these things and more.

Most of the blends in this post (not all) are part of the top 10 oils by doTERRA. This is why people normally start with one of the starter kits that include these oils.

The most popular selling kit world wide is the Home Essentials Kit because it includes these oils plus a diffuser. You can buy this directly from me and then you will receive ongoing support on how to use your oils specifically for your needs.
