There are definitely times in my life where I have pushed my body beyond exhaustion and ended up extremely stressed and burned out.
For me, this has mostly occurred around work commitments and I am grateful that I now have a work life that I can take a break if I feel myself falling into the same patterns.
I have learned a lot over the years about the best way to cope with these “seasons” in life – because, let’s face it, we can’t always control the situation – only our reaction to it. The work will not go away, but our coping mechanisms can get a whole lot better so we can support our body so we don’t end up with adrenal fatigue or sick.
Here are my top tips to cope with highly stressful situations and to prevent burn out.
Eat more vegetables
My body craves vegetables when I feel stressed. Oxidative stress causes ageing and we need to arm our bodies with anti-oxidants to fight free radical damage.
Vegetables are so important to our gut health due to their fibre content. With over 70% of our immune system directly linked to gut health, it makes sense to steam up that broccoli with your dinner tonight.
Do good things for your soul
You need to switch off, unplug and do good things for your soul. I find everyone’s soul food is different, for me it might be spending a few hours in the garden (even if it’s just weeding!) or it might be taking your kids to the beach. Whatever it is, make time – even if it’s just for a few hours. You will feel so much better for it.
Drink more water
Studies have shown that dehydration leads to higher cortisol levels (stress hormone), so drinking more water is not only good for you health but helps you keep your stress levels down and help you cope with day to day stresses.
Have a massage or take a bath
Just doing something small, purely for you will help you take a step back and reconnect with yourself. Personally, I often find it hard to switch my mind off during a highly stressed out time so before a massage, I’ll often spend a few moments inhaling an essential oil so I can just sink in and relax. It makes so much difference!
You need to be getting at least 7-8 hours a night to help your body recover from the intensity you might be putting it through. If you struggle to sleep, there are several essential oils that can support your body to find a restful nights sleep.
For some people, it’s a struggle to fall asleep and switch their brain off – these people often respond very well to the monkey brain blend of Bergamot, Balance and Lavender Peace. Other people find they fall asleep well, only to wake throughout the night – for these people I find Vetiver and Lavender is a nice combination to help their nervous systems calm down and switch off for a full night of sleep.
Essential Oil Use
I use my essential oils daily and often. I am at times, a chronic overachiever and pile way too much onto my plate and I use my oils to support me every step of the way.
Here are some of the ways I use my oils and products daily:
